Navigating your academic journey in Data Science at Emory can be exciting—but also complex. Whether you're exploring majors, planning your course schedule, or considering a double major, this FAQ page is designed to help you make informed decisions. Here, you'll find answers to common questions about AP credit, grading policies, major requirements, track options, double majors, honors programs, and the BBA + Data Science co-major.

If you're just getting started or need clarification on specific policies, this is a great place to begin. For personalized guidance, we encourage you to connect with your DSci faculty advisor or attend one of our advising sessions.

Planning Your Path: FAQs for DSci Students

No. Students who receive a 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam may receive general credit towards the 124 academic hours for graduation; however, the course does not substitute for QTM 100 or any requirements for DSci degree options.

No. For any major/minor offered by the Department of Data and Decision Sciences (DSci), courses must be taken for a letter grade to satisfy your major/minor requirements. Classes taken on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis will not be counted.

The required number of credit hours for any major offered by the Department of Data and Decision Sciences (DSci) is 50+.

  • Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) major: 20 courses/54+ credit hours
  • Public Policy Analysis (PPA) major: 19 courses/51+ credit hours
  • Data Science (DataSci) major: 15+ courses/50+ credit hours
  • Business Administration and Data Science (BBA + DataSci) major: 18 courses/56+ credit hours

For details on specific course requirements, view the degree checklists on each page for the major!

You will need to take additional DSci or track courses to graduate. Emory requires a minimum of 50 credits to graduate with a B.S. in Data Science.

You can declare any of majors or minor offered by the Department of Data and Decision Sciences (DSci) beginning in your second semester of freshman year. There will be a total of 4 in-person onboarding session held in each academic year: once at the beginning of each semester (i.e. August and January) and again just before the registration period (i.e. October and March). There will also be virtual meetings scheduled periodically if you cannot attend the in-person onboarding sessions. These sessions are usually held on Fridays.

Declare your major in OPUS under the “Course Planning and Enrollment” tile. Once you fill out the form in OPUS to declare, you will need to attend an in-person or zoom meeting with the Undergraduate Program Coordinator (UPC). You will be contacted of the time and place for the Onboarding meeting. Our degree programs can be complex, so it is crucial to get advice starting from day one. Your declaration will not be processed until after you meet with the DSci Program Coordinator.

The best resource for tract elective courses is your DSci faculty advisor. You can view your advisor on OPUS. We compiled a list of disciplinary courses with a decision sciences component that may be of interest to you, but this list should not substitute for regular advising! You may also want to attend the group advising sessions and/or drop-in advising sessions offered by the DSci department several times each semester.

We defer to the home department for each disciplinary track. If the department in question accepts the course as one of their major courses or as an equivalent course, we will also accept the course. If you have specific course(s) in mind, be sure to check with our Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).

If you’re interested in a disciplinary field not on this list, contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) to discuss.

  • By College policy, Emory students are allowed to complete one major, two majors, or one major and one minor.
  • You may double-count a maximum of two courses between any two majors, or between a major and a minor. For example, if you pursue an AMS and a Political Science major, no more than two courses can fulfill requirements for both.
  • Due to a large number of overlapping courses, some combinations of majors may not be allowed as double majors. To ensure your chosen combination is permitted, you must check with your faculty advisor or with our Program Coordinator, Sadie Hannans (E: sadie.marie.hannans@emory.edu).
  • Successfully completing two majors within four years requires careful academic planning and may impact your ability to graduate on time.

The BBA + DataSci program is functionally a DataSci major with a BUS track. If you would like to declare a separate track for your DataSci major instead, you will need to work on a DataSci major with your chosen track in the college in addition to your BBA major.

Please note - the BBA + DataSci co-major can only be declared by students already admitted to the Business School. A regular DataSci major (i.e., with an Emory College track, such as Psychology, Economics, etc.) may be declared by any students at Emory University.

If a student wants to pursue a double major with the BBA and a DataSci major with another track, the student must complete an additional set of courses required by the specific track. Please note that a double major in BBA and DataSci with a college track does not require extra Business courses.

The Business School has a matriculation period that each student who is pursuing the BBA + DataSci major must get accepted before the BBA + DataSci is considered a major. However, we encourage students who intend to pursue this course of study to declare a DataSci major as soon as possible, prior to admission to the BBA program. We cannot stress how important it is to declare DSci early.

No. Like any other double major at Emory, you will earn one degree that matches your primary course of study. As a student in Goizueta Business School, your primary course of study is Business, and therefore your degree will be a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). On your transcript, your course of study will appear as a BBA + DataSci co-major.

Admission to Goizueta is based on the admissions requirements laid out on the Business School's website; no special preference is given to students intending to declare a BBA + DataSci track.

The advantage of starting on the BBA + DataSci path early is that students can comfortably complete a full DataSci major if they do not matriculate to the Business School.
